Itinerary: 4 days desert tour from Fes to Marrakech

Day 1: MARRAKECH – ATLAS MOUNTAINS – OUARZAZATE – BOUMALNE DADES

On the first day of your 4-day desert tour from Marrakech to Fes, you will be picked up in Marrakech and head to the Dades Gorges.

To begin the adventure, you will cross the spectacular Atlas Mountains. There are several stops along the way to appreciate the breathtaking beauty of the landscapes before continuing on to the world-famous Kasbah of Aït Benhaddou.

Once there, you enter another world as you explore the exceptional beauty of this kasbah with its centuries-old but impressive Berber architecture. Ait Benhaddou is also a UNESCO World Heritage site and the filming location for numerous Hollywood films, including the Oscar-winning The Gladiator and Lawrence of Arabia, as well as big hits such as The Mummy.

Enjoy a delicious Moroccan lunch just outside the kasbah before heading to the nearby town of Ouarzazate, known as the Little Hollywood of Africa. Here you can visit the famous Atlas Studios.

Next stop will be Sakora to visit an authentic kasabah called Amridil, followed by an excursion to the Valley of Roses, named for the thousands of rose bushes. The region is home to the production of roses for a variety of uses, from beauty products to kitchen products. Although the industry exists year-round, a Rose Festival is held once a year in mid-May to celebrate the end of the rose season.

At the end of the day, you will have a chance to see the famous “Monkey Fingers” rock formation and a beautiful viewpoint of the Dades Gorges.

Finish the day in Boumalne Dades, where you will be taken to your riad for the night.

Day 2:BOUMALNE DADES – TINGHIR – SAHARA DESERT – MERZOUGA

On the second day of your 4 days desert tour from Marrakech to Fes, you will depart for the golden sand dunes of the Sahara Desert. On your way to Merzouga, there will be plenty of fascinating spots to visit.

One of the first stops will be at the Todra Gorges, known for its towering cliffs and breathtaking scenery, plus the sensational Toudra Valley, characterized by its stunning rock formations and picturesque landscapes.

After that, we will take you to the city of Rissani, a traditional market town known for its vibrant souks and historical monuments, as well as an historic trading post for caravans who passed through from the south.

It is also interesting to note that the current royal family has its origins from this city, as well as the widely considered founder of the Alaouite Dynasty of Morocco of the 1600s, Moulay Ali Cherif.

In the evening you’ll arrive to Merzouga where you’ll hop on a camel and trek your way into the mesmerizing Sahara Desert for a spectacular sunset, followed by a night spent in a desert camp.

You’ll be greeted by some delicious tea and local snacks as you settle into your desert haven before being swept away by the beauty of the night sky and Berber music around the campfire, making for a truly memorable lifetime experience.

Day 3: SAHARA DESERT – ERG CHEBBI – MERZOUGA – KHAMLIA –  NOMADS – OFF-ROADING

On the third day of your 4 days desert tour from Marrakech to Fes, it’s all about a local tour around the region. Today, we encourage you to wake up early in order to witness the stunning sunrise over the Sahara Desert. It’s worth it, we promise!

After a tasty desert breakfast at the camp, you’ll explore the surrounding area and be welcomed into the home of a nomadic family to learn more about their traditional way of life.

From there you’ll take a trip to M’fis, an abandoned mining town peacefully tucked away in the Erg Chebbi sand dunes. While it may be a ghost town, it still holds its allure as a formerly vibrant place where the mineral kohl was extracted to create ancient eyeliner.

On your way to Khamlia where you will pay a visit to the Tuareg people – an indigenous ethnic group also known as the “Blue Men of the Sahara Desert” – venture up to some of the highest viewpoints where you can properly take in the vast beauty of the region. Once in Khamlia, you will be treated to some exceptional traditional music and dance by this special group of people found in Morocco only here.

After some fine entertainment, take delight in trying a local dish found only in Morocco – Berber Pizza. A classic recipe composed of ground beef, onions and exotic spices which harmoniously come together for a culinary experience like no other.

Later venture into the stunning Erg Chebbi Dunes and enjoy the tranquility of the desert. In the afternoon you’ll head back to the hotel near the palm grove, where you can relax and take a refreshing dip in the swimming pool.

Day 4: MERZOUGA – SAHARA DESERT – MIDDLE ATLAS MOUNTAINS – FES

On the final day of your 4 days desert tour from Marrakech to Fes, you will depart for the imperial city of Fes.

Shortly after leaving Merzouga, you will make a quick stop in Erfoud, a desert town known for its fossils and traditional outfits.

Continue for a lovely scenic drive through the Ziz Valley and oasis, dotted with the seemingly endless palm groves of Ouled Chaker and small Berber villages. This location is one of the principle resource areas for the production of dates – an essential element of the Moroccan way of life – and are of the very best quality.

For those of you who love apples, the next stop is for you. Midelt is a famous agricultural hinterland producing all kinds of delicious fruits and vegetables, but is most commonly referred to as the national apple capital as 90% of the countries apples are produced here.

From there, you’ll head off to Michlifen, home to Morocco’s famous ski resorts, and you’ll explore the beautiful cedar forest in Azrou, home to the Barbary apes. You can even feed the monkeys if you fancy!

Soon after, you can enjoy a short stop in Ifrane, lovingly referred to as “Little Switzerland.” Go for a walk through the pleasant green streets, or enjoy some coffee and pastries at one of the French-style coffee shops.
